What’s God’s will for my life?

Knowing God, His plans and where you fit in with God’s will is a massive thing. We can easily see some areas where God is clear in His calling and His will is obvious in certain areas. But there are also so many areas that are hard to see. It’s hard to know what God is wanting for you. ‘Is this God or my own desire?’ or many other question might pop into your head when trying to figure out God’s will for your own life.

Firstly, we need to know what God’s will is. Why is His will the best for me? Can’t I determine my life for myself? We must know that God is Good, He is the creator and our Father. So, as Revelation 4 v 11 says:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive, Glory, Honour and Power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created…”

So if God has all this power and is the Creator of all He must have the authority to rule over all and then He must also know what is right and wrong and has a plan for you in your life. In Jeremiah 29 v 11, we see God’s will is very clear for Israel.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

God also has clear plans for each of us. He has a plan for each and every one of us and the plan for us is for a good purpose and not to harm us. His will is good and pleasing.

Now how to determine his will is more difficult and sometimes we can really struggle in seeing where and what God is trying to take us on to. One thing we must remember is that God is the one leading and guiding us. Pslam 25 v 12 says:

“Who, then, are those who fear the Lord? He will instruct them in the ways they should choose. They will spend their days in prosperity, and their descendants will inherit the land. The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.”

God will instruct us, He confides in us and He makes promises with us. He is the ultimate leader and we must learn to follow Him whole heartedly because He knows what is right for us in all areas of our lives.

Another area we have touched on is knowing that God’s will is good. He is the Creator and has all authority. He works for our good, has plans to look after us and has great plans for our future. Romans 12 v 2 speaks about God’s

“…good, pleasing and perfect will”

There are a couple of aspects of Gods will that are good to think about. One key area that we must remember when trying to figure outs God’s will for our lives is simple. The Bible, God’s word is full of great truths and guidelines to help us keep to God’s will for our lives. We must never overlook the Bible when seeking God’s will. Another area that is important but can be more difficult is to see what God’s will is directly for your life. Discerning this is more difficult but so important. We must give God time to work and show where He wants to take us in life.

To allow God to work and show us what he wants for our lives we must wait and yearn to listen to Him as He is the one who knows us better than we know ourselves. Here are a few points that we could think about to help us when we are trying to discern God’s will for our lives.

Relationship – The same with any relationship it is a two way thing, God loves it when you talk to him but you also have to listen to him as well, whether through a gentle nudge or an audible voice, God is constancy communicating with you.
Characteristics – We must also be obedient and willing in Gods will for our lives. Things that he has placed in our lives already we must be obedient in and willing to complete. Having christ like characteristics is also important.
Wisdom – Personal experience, God stories or changed circumstances can be amazing and we should never take them for granted but sticking to truth is vital in seeking Gods will, we must stick to the fundamentals of the Gospel and to Gods word being wise in all we and checking back Gods callings on our lives to his word.
Prompting – Sometimes we can look in the wrong place for God and his will. We can be waiting for a shout from the mountain top when all along God is next to us speaking in a calm, quiet voice. God can work through a repeated thought or through quiet time alone with God, so don’t right off thoughts because you think there small and insignificant, instead tests Gods prompting and and compare against Gods word.
Faith – Gods will can take time to be determined in our lives therefore we must have faith in knowing that our heavily father has a plan for us and he will reveal it at the right time. He is in control and we must push into his will for our lives even when we feel it should be moving quicker.
Freedom – God wants freedom for you and for you to be able to see his will in your life. Follow this link to our Freedom article from one of our recent services.

God’s will for your life will be revelled and He has plans for all of us, for you and for me, better than we can ever imagine. God is doing a work in you, and we all need to press into that.
